Best way to style your hair with a flat iron?

I have really thin hair and I just bought a new flat iron. It is a lot better then my old one and it has temperature control, which i wanted. The temperature can range from 280-410 degrees F. I was wondering what the best temperature would be to use to curl and wave my hair at and what the technique is used for doing so. Thanks for all your imput!

The lower temps are great for people who have bleached or fragile hair. Use the lowest heat setting for that.....bump up a bit for people who have fine /thin hair....the hottest setting is for people who have thick/course really curly/wavy hair. So, depending on your hair color situation (natural color or color treated?) I'd probably head for the 325 range.

You can do so much w/ a flat iron. "Smoothing iron" is becoming the new term for them, because you can do so much more than just make your hair flat!! lol It's all in the wrist. You can flick out the ends just by turning your wrist outward as you reach the ends. You can do some beautiful Hollywood curls by applying your thermal setting spray to a small strand, then as you put the iron on the hair at the top of the strand actually wrap the hair around the iron once and then pull the iron through the hair. If you did it correctly, you'll have an awesome looking curl. You can do this all over your head. Start at the bottom of your hair..(gotta clip all the top hair out of the way, and work section by section up to the top of the head) Good luck and have fun!

ummmmmmmmmm.... you can pull it up depending on your hair length...put a ribbon in it...i would keep the temperature between 280-300...if you do it to high it could fry your hair

You can't usually curl your hair with a straightener. BUT you can flip your with it! Heres how:

1 get a round brush, and as you get to the bottom wrap the hair around the brush.

Somewhere in the 300's.

You dont want to fry your hair.

Also, you only want to do pieces of hair 3-4 times with the iron.

Anymore to get it straight means your straightener is not the best one for you.

And you should ALWAYS use a protector on your hair like this one,

I have been using that for awile now, and it is fantastic.

[well, i just noticed you said you do use protector]

A flat iron is not meant to curl or wave hair, on the other hand if you want to curl the ends in or out it will be able to help you about that.. just guide the hair with the straightner to a curve at the end instead of strait. I wouldn't really go higher than 350 degrees because you really dont want to damage your hair.

You should always use a thermal protector on your hair. The best thermal protectors to get are through a salon. Most of the store brands contain products that are not good for your hair, such as: petroleum, waxes, etc. When using the thermal protector you can use a higher temp with no worry of damaging your hair.

Start with the lowest temperature first 280degrees. If you are worried that 280degrees might damage your hair run some cold water over the hair first to keep the temperature from damaging the hair or unplug the machine just before you use it. That way the temperature will gradually decrease. There are many kinds of hair so slowly and carefully do it. Be patient. You will learn through experience the right temperature for you. Dont keep the high temperature on the hair for too long. If you want to do it really professionally book yourself into a good hair salon bring your machine and watch very carefully what the hair salon professional does with it.

Hope that helps.
